Because silk is natural and ‘breathable’ the characteristics of a silk filled duvet are such that it is much more flexible than duvets with other fillings such as down, feather or polyester in coping with changes in your sleeping environment such as ambient room temperature and your own body temperature.

For maximum comfort your choice of weight of duvet should be made taking into consideration your own usual warmth requirements (some people are naturally warmer or colder in bed than ‘average’), and the ambient temperature of the bedroom.

Although tog ratings are measured mechanically our silk filled duvets feel warmer than conventionally made duvets filled with down, feather or polyester and with the same tog rating for two main reasons :

1. Because the filling is even throughout the duvet it acts more like a blanket - there are no ‘cold spots’ in the duvets which occur in box filled duvets.
2. British Standard requires that the stated tog ratings are minimums. Our duvets in fact achieve test results comfortably above the advertised levels, but of course within the +3 tog limit set down in the British Standard.

However the breathable property of silk also reduces the possibility that you will get too hot under the duvet. This means that silk filled duvets are comfortable over a much wider range of conditions than conventional down / feather / polyester duvets.

The following are guidelines to help you to choose the correct duvet, but ultimately the choice of weight of duvet is highly personal and down to individual preference. If you are unsure about the most suitable weight you are welcome to contact us to discuss your requirements personally.

3.0 tog – Super light weight. This weight provides warmth up to approximately the equivalent of 4.5 tog in conventional down, feather and polyester filled duvets, but will be cooler than a conventional 4.5 tog duvet. This weight is ideal for those who require only minimum warmth and weight.

4.5 tog – Light summer weight. This weight also provides warmth up to approximately the equivalent of 7.5 tog in conventional down, feather and polyester filled duvets. The breathability of silk means that this duvet is comfortable for summer use except perhaps in extreme ‘heatwave’ conditions (when just a sheet on its own would normally be adequate).

9.0 tog - Usual autumn / spring weight. This is the most versatile weight providing comfort in the range approximately the equivalent of 6 tog to 12.0 tog in conventional down, feather and polyester filled duvets. For many people this makes it suitable for use all year round, including summer use up to night time temperatures of about 17°C

13.5 tog - Winter weight. Recommended for those who feel the cold at night, and for winter use in rooms where the ambient temperature falls below about 12° Celsius . This weight gives a performance of approximately 12 tog upwards in conventional down, feather and polyester filled duvets, and is likely to be too warm in summer for many.
